Analysis for Geriatric Patients¢¥ Nursing Needs Following Dischange from Hospital


Abstract
The purposes of this study were to identify the characteristics of the geriatric patients, the patient¢¥s nursing needs following discharge to appraise patient¢¥s own oponions toward home care systems and to analyze the factors associated with the patients nursing needs.
196 patients aged 60 and over were interviewed with questionaire at the day of discharge between April, 1, 1982 and June 15. 1982, in S. University Hospital.
The findinges are;
1) Characteristics of the subjects.
79.1% of patients were admitted through outpatient department.
65.3% of total subjects had medical insurance to aid hospitalization cost.
Departmental distribution of subjects were; 48.0% in internal medicne, 18.9% in general surgery and 9.7% in opthalmology.
42.3% of subjects were in the hospital, for 11 to 20 days before discharge.
And average hospitalization day was 17 days. There was statistically significant difference between period of hospitalization and subjects who required operation and not. (p£¼ 0. 05^**)
34.7% of subjects had diagnosis of some kind of neoplasm, specifically 10. 7% of all subjects had lung cancer.
2) Nursing needs of subjects st the time of discharge 70% of total subjects were being discharged from the hospital with some or great degree of nursing needs, the comfort need which include relief of pain, sleep and rest were the most frequently indicated.(76%)
Needs for mental health, general hygiene, general metabolism and activity and safety were also ranked high among the subjects.
3) Patient¢¥s own opinion for home care system following discharge.
More than 85% and 60% of total subjects agreed to have some form of follow up home care system provided by hospital or public health nurse respectively.
That is, regardless of sources of medical expenses most of patients wanted professional help at home following discharge.
81% of total subjects was discharged with appointment for return visit of clinic.
The longer hospitalized, the higher incidence of return appointment (p£¼0.05^**)
4) There was significant difference between factors associated with the degree of patient¢¥s nursing needs and treatment of chief complaint and type of the patients. (p£¼0.01^***)
